Caldecott Medal Winner!
This book has special meaning to some of us at Hicklebee's. We were attending a reception in New York for booksellers last year when Jerry Pinkney came over to show us an unfinished copy of The Lion & the Mouse. We even whispered the word "Caldecott" among ourselves and have looked forward to sharing this beautiful book with anyone who had a moment to spare.
Hurray for The Lion & the Mouse!
In award-winning artist Jerry Pinkney's wordless adaptation of one of Aesop's most beloved fables, an unlikely pair learn that no act of kindness is ever wasted. After a ferocious lion spares a cowering mouse that he'd planned to eat, the mouse later comes to his rescue, freeing him from a poacher's trap. With vivid depictions of the landscape of the African Serengeti and expressively-drawn characters, Pinkney makes this a truly special retelling, and his stunning pictures speak volumes.

About the book...
Four mysterious letters change Miranda’s world forever.
By sixth grade, Miranda and her best friend, Sal, know how to navigate their New York City neighborhood. They know where it’s safe to go, like the local grocery store, and they know whom to avoid, like the crazy guy on the corner.
But things start to unravel. Sal gets punched by a new kid for what seems like no reason, and he shuts Miranda out of his life. The apartment key that Miranda’s mom keeps hidden for
emergencies is stolen. And then Miranda finds a mysterious note scrawled on a tiny slip of paper:
I am coming to save your friend’s life, and my own.
I must ask two favors. First, you must write me a letter.
The notes keep coming, and Miranda slowly realizes that whoever is leaving them knows all about her, including things that have not even happened yet. Each message brings her closer to believing that only she can prevent a tragic death. Until the final note makes her think she’s too late.

But as time goes on, Sam grows weary of standing by and watching as his friends and family suffer at the hands of racism in their own community. Sibert Award for Non-Fiction!
They had the right stuff. They defied the prejudices of the time. And they blazed a trail for generations of women to follow.
What
does it take to be an astronaut? Excellence at flying, courage,
intelligence, resistance to stress, top physical shape — any checklist
would include these. But when America created NASA in 1958, there was
another unspoken rule: you had to be a man. Here is the tale of
thirteen women who proved that they were not only as tough as the
toughest man but also brave enough to challenge the government. They
were blocked by prejudice, jealousy, and the scrawled note of one of
the most powerful men in Washington. But even though the Mercury 13
women did not make it into space, they did not lose, for their example
empowered young women to take their place in the sky, piloting jets and
commanding space capsules. ALMOST ASTRONAUTS is the story of thirteen
true pioneers of the space age.
Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith (Hardcover)

*William C. Morris Award Non-Fiction!
Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species, his revolutionary tract on evolution and the fundamental ideas involved, in 1859. Nearly 150 years later, the theory of evolution continues to create tension between the scientific and religious communities. Challenges about teaching the theory of evolution in schools occur annually all over the country. This same debate raged within Darwin himself, and played an important part in his marriage: his wife, Emma, was quite religious, and her faith gave Charles a lot to think about as he worked on a theory that continues to spark intense debates.
Deborah Heiligman's new biography of Charles Darwin is a thought-provoking account of the man behind evolutionary theory: how his personal life affected his work and vice versa. The end result is an engaging exploration of history, science, and religion for young readers.

Schnieder Family Book Award for Teens
Marcelo Sandoval hears music no one else can hear--part of the autism-like impairment no doctor has been able to identify--and he's always attended a special school where his differences have been protected. But the summer after his junior year, his father demands that Marcelo work in his law firm's mailroom in order to experience "the real world." There Marcelo meets Jasmine, his beautiful and surprising coworker, and Wendell, the son of another partner in the firm.
He learns about competition and jealousy, anger and desire. But it's a picture he finds in a file -- a picture of a girl with half a face -- that truly connects him with the real world: its suffering, its injustice, and what he can do to fight.
Reminiscent of "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" in the intensity and purity of its voice, this extraordinary novel is a love story, a legal drama, and a celebration of the music each of us hears inside.
